JAIPUR: Rajasthan has once again occupied first rank in implementation of the Prime Minister's Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) by constructing 16,301-km-long roads connecting as many as 4,783 villages at a cost of Rs. 2,107 crore. State Public Works Department Minister Rajendra Rathore said here on Wednesday that a record Rs. 608 crore was spent on the scheme during 2005-06 against the sanctioned amount of Rs. 229 crore. During the current financial year, Rs. 313 crore was spent in the State till August against the allocation of Rs. 229 crore. Mr. Rathore said as many as 8,871 works had been sanctioned under the PMGSY across the State so far, and 3,911 of them had been completed till August this year. He expressed the hope that the scheme's target of connecting all villages with a population of 500 and more with roads by December 2007 would be achieved on schedule. The Minister pointed out that the cost of road construction in Rajasthan was estimated at Rs. 15 lakh per km, which was much less than the expenditure incurred in other States. The Centre and the World Bank had also praised the State's achievement, he said.
