KOLKATA: Tata Motors is "absolutely hopeful" of getting hold of the 1,000 acres of land for its proposed automobile plant at Singur in West Bengal's Hooghly district before the yearend. In the event of the stalemate over the land acquisition process continuing, however, it would have to look for other options, Ravi Kant, Managing Director, Tata Motors, reportedly told a video conference from Mumbai on Wednesday in answer to a question on the threat by certain political parties to stall the project. A spokesperson of the company told The Hindu from Pune that Mr. Kant reiterated Tata Motors' commitment to offer to the country in 2008 the car it planned to manufacture at the proposed plant. To honour the commitment it was very essential that the land at Singur was made available to the company before the end of this year, Mr. Kant said. On whether the Tata Motors authorities were willing to discuss with Trinamool Congress leader, Mamata Banerjee, the situation arising from the agitation being led by her against the acquisition of farm land for the car manufacturing project, Mr. Kant said that Tata Motors was willing to talk to anyone. He also said that as soon as the land was handed over to Tata Motors the company would conduct a survey of people living in the area as per its decision to improve the employability of the local people by providing relevant training to those with different types of educational background.
