Welcoming the Lyngdoh Committee's report on students' union election reforms, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad's Delhi University Students' Union election coordinator Rajiv Babber on Wednesday said that though the recommendations by the Committee were neither realistic nor pragmatic, a positive beginning had been made. "The Lyngdoh Committee report is silent on dummy candidates, a trend that often creates confusion and problems during elections," he added. "To curb this menace, students' unions including ABVP and National Students' Union of India should be allowed to use symbols. With the use of symbols, students would be voting for their select groups rather than getting confused with the namesakes or dummy candidates. The Lyngdoh Committee should make recommendations that are practical and are not taken in isolation," said Mr. Babber. Speaking about the limit on election expenses proposed by the Committee, he added: "The Rs. 5,000 limit on election expense should be increased. We are also demanding that the University administration organise official presidential debates where student-voters could directly interact with the candidates and judge their suitability. Also the trend of giving gifts and liquor parties on the campus during elections should be banned." ***
