KURNOOL: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said the issue of Tungabhadra Low Level Canal modernisation was taken up with the Karnataka Government. Had the project been located in Andhra Pradesh, the widening and lining works could have started by now. Addressing a public meeting at STBC ground along with the AICC president Sonia Gandhi here on Wednesday, he said irrigation projects were the only answer to the recurring droughts. He promised to complete Guru Raghavendra, Hundri-Neeva and Gorakal reservoir works on a war footing.
New job scheme
To provide quick relief to the drought-affected people, he said a scheme similar to the National Employment Guarantee Scheme would be introduced in Kurnool, which was expected to be included in the National Scheme next year. Nandyal MLA Shilpa Mohan Reddy donated Rs. 50 lakhs to the Nandyal municipality for developing underground drainage. The cheque was presented to Ms. Gandhi. Mayor S. Raghurami Reddy, MP Kotla Suryaprakasa Reddy presented mementos to Ms. Gandhi. Undavalli Arunkumar translated the speech of Mrs. Gandhi from English to Telugu. Ms. Gandhi distributed assets to farmers and members of self-help groups of women.
