DMRC repairs damage caused during "Delhi bandh"

Staff Reporter

The total cost of repairs has come to around Rs.20 lakhs

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has repaired all the damage that was caused to its property -- especially the glass doors and windows of trains and stations -- during the "Delhi bandh" by traders on September 20. The total cost of repairs has come to nearly Rs.20 lakhs.

The Corporation said that while 52 glasses of seven trains were cracked by stone-throwing, 16 glasses at the Station Control Room of Welcome station were damaged while an equal number at Tilak Nagar station had been smashed.

While the damage at Welcome and Tilak Nagar was repaired within 24 hours, the damage to the train glasses was rectified within five days as against nearly three months that it would have ordinarily taken as repairing every glass required around 12 hours of work by four engineers.

The glasses are joined by a special adhesive that is imported from the US and France as it has special properties and characteristics; it has to withstand the extreme temperatures of Delhi and intensive vibrations caused by train operations.

The total cost of replacement of one train glass has come to around Rs.35,000 including the cost of adhesive, manpower and withdrawal of train from service.

The Metro trains had suffered 327 hits on the day of the bandh; of these, 112 were on the trains' body that left scars on seven trains.

In view of the mob attacks between Shahdara and Seelampur stations, the DMRC now proposes to put up a wire mesh above the Shahdara boundary wall.
