THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas on Wednesday promised the Assembly stringent measures to end corruption in the Transport Department. Replying to the debate on the demands for grants for Taxes on Vehicles, Transport, Stationery and Printing and other Administrative Services, the Minister said that all regional transport offices in the State would be computerised by November. This would help to eliminate middlemen and check corruption. Considering the increasing number of accidents, road safety clubs would be formed in all schools to create awareness about causes of road accidents. Mr. Thomas said that he had taken up with Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T. R. Baalu the issues over the Supreme Court order making speed governors for transport vehicles mandatory in the State. He had urged the Union Minister to adopt a uniform policy for the countryHe said that the State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) had been directed to ensure profitability at the depot level. He said that the Government would propose a package of policies to improve the transport sector.
