Ahamed should resign, says BJP

Staff Reporter

Party welcomes move for CBI inquiry into conspiracy angle

Kozhikode: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded the ouster of Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed from the Union Council of Ministers in the wake of the Marad Judicial Inquiry Commission report ``holding the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) responsible for the massacre of nine fishermen on the Marad beach on May 2, 2003.''

Addressing a news conference here on Wednesday, BJP State president P.S. Sreedharan Pillai said that either Mr. Ahamed should resign on his own or Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should remove him from the Council of Ministers.

The IUML was a part of the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre.

He alleged that the IUML leader had violated prohibitory orders and offered prayers at the Marad Juma Mosque after it had been sealed by the district administration following seizure of explosives and weapons during police investigation. Mr. Ahamed had then gone to the Marad beach to broker peace between the aggrieved Hindu families and the Muslim community.

The BJP leader said that Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Dr. Manmohan Singh should make note of the Commission's findings that ``secular forces'' unleashed terror on the Hindu community without any provocation.
