50 more MBBS seats

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Centre has given clearance for increasing the seats for MBBS by 50 each in the Kottayam and Thrissur Government medical colleges. The clearance was given after the Medical Education Director informed the Union Health Department that the Government will provide facilities as per the recommendations of the Medical Council of India in these colleges. — Special Correspondent

Mar Milithios nominated as Catholicos-designate

KOTTAYAM: The Managing Committee of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, which met here on Wednesday, unanimously nominated Paulose Mar Milithios, Metropolitan of Kunnamkulam diocese, as Catholicos-designate. Speaking to The Hindu , Fr. O. Thomas, clergy secretary, said the other three contenders, all senior metropolitans, to the post had withdrawn from the contest. The final election to the post of successor to the Catholicose of East Baselius Mar Thoma Didymos I will now be held on October 12 at the meeting of the Malankara Syrian Christian Association. — Staff Reporter

Arakkal Beevi passes away

KANNUR: Adiraja Ayisha Muthu Beevi, head of the Arakkal royal house here, died on Wednesday. She was 84. The Arakkal Beevi, as she was known here, died in a private hospital where she was admitted two weeks ago. She became the head of the royal family in 1997. Adiraja Ayisha Beevi will succeed her as the head of the royal house, family sources said.

Tantri case: one more in police net

KASARAGOD: T.P. Sattar, a key player in the tantri case, is under police observation in a private hospital at Cheruvattur near here. He is a native of Thrikkarippur. The police said on Wednesday that a special investigation team from Ernakulam would take him into custody later in the evening. Nileswaram Circle Inspector K. Ashraf received information that Sattar was undergoing treatment in a hospital at Cheruvattur. — Staff Reporter

District panchayat chief to quit

KOTTAYAM: District panchayat president Thomas Kunnappally (Kerala Congress-M) has expressed his willingness to step down. He will put in his papers on Thursday morning. The UDF, which was in power with the majority of one vote, lost majority in the 23-member council when the LDF registered a shock victory at Kangazha division in the recent byelection. — Staff Reporter

Students form new society

KOCHI: A group of professional students of CA, CWA, CS, CFA and ACCA formed a Society for Corporate Professional Students (SCOPE).

The society will be launched at a function to be held on October 4 at Hotel Avenue Regent, said K.S. Shailendranath, chairman, and S. Sabarinath, secretary, of the organisation. The society plans to publish a journal for students, procure books and periodicals and organise seminars for students. It would also help students in obtaining placements. Corporate exhibitions will also be organised to introduce the latest trends and developments in the corporate world to the students. — Staff Reporter

Marad: CBI probe hailed

KOZHIKODE: Hindu Aikya Vedi has welcomed the State Government's decision to recommend a CBI probe into the Marad massacre based on the Marad Judicial Commission report.
