Maharashtra may call special session

Mumbai: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil on Wednesday countered the Karnataka Government's move of holding a special session of the State legislature in Belgaum by saying that the State would also consider holding a special session of the legislature only on this issue.

Talking to presspersons, Mr. Patil said the Nationalist Congress Party had already made the demand of holding the special session and several other parties were also demanding the same and added that the Government would consider this demand in its Cabinet meet.

Licence granted

Bangalore: Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a unit of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, has been granted the licence for ISO 9001: 2000 Quality Management System certification by the Bureau of Indian Standards. This will cover ADE's work related to aeronautical systems in the areas of unmanned air vehicles, flight stimulation, combat aircraft systems and air weapon development and integration.

Prithvi Raj is KASSIA president

Bangalore: The 56th annual general meeting of the Karnataka Small-Scale Industries Association (KASSIA) has elected R. Prithvi Raj as president and M.C.R. Shetty as vice-president for 2006-07. The new general secretary will be A.S. Joshi. The joint secretary is Suresh Kumar Jain and B.N. Ananda is the treasurer.

Acharya for Udupi

Udupi: Medical Education Minister V.S. Acharya will visit Udupi on October 2 and 3. A press release by the Department of Information here on Wednesday stated that the Minister would arrive in Udupi on October 1. He would participate in the Gandhi Jayanti programme in Udupi at 8 a.m. on October 2. He would accept petitions from the people at the Deputy Commissioner's office the same day.

Farmers stage rasta roko

BIJAPUR: Farmers, who have been agitating for the implementation of the Rs. 202-crore tank filling project, staged rasta roko here and elsewhere in the district.

Meanwhile, the indefinite hunger strike launched at Horthi hobli in Indi taluk entered the 18th day on Wednesday.

Three drown in well

BELLARY: The bodies of three boys, who are suspected to have fallen into an old well in the city, were recovered after hectic efforts by the police and fire-fighting personnel. They had gone to the well for fishing and not for swimming going by the murky water. The police identified the deceased as Shrikant, Karthik and Shrinath. The

Six arrested on murder charge

HASSAN: The Banavara Rural Police have arrested six persons in connection with dacoity and murder on Tuesday night and seized two motorcycles, two mobile phones and stereo players from them, Superintendent of Police Panduranga H. Rane has said.

He gave the names of the arrested as Dinesh (26) of Megalahosahalli, Arsikere; Suresh (25) of Hiriyur; Kumar (26) of Doddadevanur; P. Kumar (24) of Kaamenahalli, Kadur; Chandranaika (24) of Kadur taluk and Chandra (20) of Doddadevanur. They allegedly murdered a lorry dirver near Dudda in February. Criticised

BHADRAVATI: Former MLA and Janata Dal (Secular) leader M.J. Appaji said that no developmental works have been taken up in the constituency after B.K. Sangamesh took over as MLA two-and-a-half years ago.

Mr. Appaji, who lost to Mr. Sangamesh in the last Assembly elections, said the latter's statement that he got Rs. 60 crore sanctioned for various developmental works was false.

Mr. Appaji welcomed Mr. Sangamesh to an open discussion on the issue of developmental works taken up by the latter.

Dies in accident

Bhadravati: One person died when a vehicle hit him at Edehally village in the taluk on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Balanna (55). A case has been registered by the Holehonnur Police. — Correspondent

Suicide

Bhadravati: A woman allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at Mydolalu village near here on Monday.

The Holehonnur Police, who registered a case, said Vinoda (25) was said to have taken the extreme step owing to ill-health. — Correspondent

Competition

Bhadravati: The District Wrestlers' Association will organise a two-day district-level competition at the Satya Dharma Kalyan Mantap at Holehonnur in the taluk from October 7.

A press release from the association said wrestlers who contested at the State and national-level championships were not eligible to take part in the event. Weight and powerlifting competitions would also be conducted for men and women, the release added. — Correspondent

Six arrested

Raichur: The Raichur Police arrested Bheemaiah, Mahesh, Mahadev, Mani, Niraj and Ramanjaneya and seized gelatine sticks and other explosive materials from them, while they allegedly engaged in a blasting operation at a hillock near AIR station in the city on Tuesday.

All have been remanded in judicial custody. The Yergera Police registered a case.
