Tourism Day celebrated

Meanwhile, the Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation, in association with the Chennai District Cultural Forum, celebrated the World Tourism Day with enthusiasm on Wednesday.

Presiding over the function, Chennai Collector R. Jaya elaborated on the need for people to undertake tours for a respite from monotonous life and to rejuvenate their health.

Ms. Jaya pointed out that undertaking a tour does not only mean taking a long journey, even a visit to the beach or a park is a tour. She said that the advantages of visiting different places would enrich the knowledge of the people.

The Collector highlighted the vast career openings that were available to the youth in the tourism sector.

C. Venkatnarayanan, president, Youth Hostel, Adyar, delved upon the concept of starting youth hostels, which now has a presence in more than 70 countries.

He said that the first youth hostel was started by Richard Schirrmann in Germany to provide economical accommodation and to facilitate cultural exchange between youngsters.

He said the youth hostel in Chennai charged just Rs.40 for a day's stay.

Mr. Venkatnarayanan wanted the salient features of the tourism sector to reach the youths, for which he requested the State Government to impart the information through the media.

The Collector also distributed prizes to winners of various cultural competitions.
