CHENNAI: Using computers for business transactions could become easy for the Tamil-dependent population now. M. Srinivasan, a 69-year-old software consultant, has developed a Tamil software for database entry and accounting that caters to various fields. Software development is generally associated with youngsters. But, Mr. Srinivasan, who retired as a divisional engineer from the telecoms department, took up the creation of computer software as a serious hobby. "I have developed a Tamil accounting package, `Sarikanakku' on Microsoft Visual Fox Pro, which is user-friendly," he said. It took him about three years to develop the software with numerous commands in Tamil. Claiming it to be the first of its kind, he said that besides accounting, bills and reports could also be obtained in Tamil. Mr. Srinivasan has also created a database for bibliography in alphabetical order. "I took it as a challenge to index 216 Tamil alphabets in their order," he said. The software would come in handy for accounting and billing operations of small scale traders, ranging from the vegetable vendor to hoteliers. At present, the software consultant is involved in creating a software to translate English words to Tamil. "I have translated adjectives and adverbs so far, and will be able to complete the project in a year," he said. Mr. Srinivasan has given a demonstration of his software in several government departments, and has developed programmes for several traders. He has also written books in Tamil on literature and computer usage. Priced between Rs.5,000 and Rs.7,000, the accounting package would be available in the market in two or three months. Mr. Srinivasan can be contacted at 24759578 or 9283109623.
