AIADMK members urge Speaker to disqualify Shanmugam

Staff Reporter

"He had voluntarily given up his membership"

CHENNAI: Fiftynine All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) members of the Legislative Assembly have urged Speaker R. Avudaiappan to disqualify the party's Madurai West MLA, S.V. Shanmugam, from the Assembly.

In their petition, they said that from September 12 onwards Mr. Shanmugam had attracted disqualification "by his continuous activities outside the House wherein by his speech and conduct he had voluntarily given up his membership of the political party, which had set him as a candidate, namely the AIADMK." Citing press clippings, they said the MLA had been quoted as saying "I will function as an independent candidate in the legislative assembly. I will fully support all the actions of the DMK government... "

"Contrary to the directions of the AIADMK, he attended a public meeting held in his constituency presided over by M.K. Stalin, the Minister for Local Administration (belonging to the DMK party)... As everyone knows in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK party members never share a common platform inasmuch as the AIADMK party considers the DMK party to be anti-national, anti-social and anti-people."
