Hyderabad: They set hearts aflutter. Given their curvy and gorgeous shapes it was impossible not to fall in love with them. As the beauty queens `catwalked' the road spectators heaved sighs of ecstasy. Gleaming in their paint and nickel, the classic cars and bikes of yore stole many a heart. The vintage car and bike rally at the Necklace Road organised by the Tourism Department on Wednesday to mark the World Tourism Day revived memories of a romantic era. A large number of people turned up at Lumbini Park from where the rally was flagged off by Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation Chairman T.K Dewan. Austin, Ford, Plymouth, Dodge, Rolls Royce - they were all their in their pristine glory. So were the BSAs, Nortons, Triumphs, Royal Enfields. The show was organised in association with the Deccan Heritage Automobile Association. There were 30 classic cars and 40 bikes in all. Their proud owners wore traditional costumes.
Mayor T. Krishna Reddy rode a BSA Road Rocket much to the delight of its owner, Inderjit Singh. Chitra Ramchandran, Principal Secretary, Tourism, was present. There were five cars, including three Austin Seven, belonging to Mohd. Shah Alam Rasool Khan.
Huge draw
The Austin Six belonging to Neeraj Naidu was also a big draw. This red beauty, a 1926 model, has a wooden floorboard, spokes in wheels and springs in place of shock absorbers. Ford A, a 1930 convertible belonging to the Hind Motor Training School, was also there. There was a special prize for the best period costumes.
