CSIR celebrates 65th anniversary

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) celebrated its 65th anniversary since its charter.

R.K. Celly delivered the special address, discussing the role of building materials in affordable housing. Mr. Celly is the executive director of the Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council within the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation. He emphasised the need to recycle waste materials and to find novel ways to save energy.

More than 1,000 visitors attended the open event, which provided not only tours of facilities but games and contests. Mr. Celly also presented the Dr M. Ramaiah Prize for best technical paper and certificates of merit for other outstanding work done.

N. Lakshmanan, director of the Structural Engineering Research Centre and co-ordinating director of CSIR Madras Complex, spoke of a deficit of intellectual capital in the research and design sector.

He gave two reasons: most students head for the Information Technology sector rather than research, and those that do, work instead for multinational corporations who provide higher salaries and better facilities.

Nonetheless, CSIR boasted of a number of accomplishments, including work done in disaster mitigation, missile defense development for the Indian navy and test simulations done for local and foreign automobile manufacturers.

Mr. Celly said the government has convened a Guidelines for Green Habitat (GGH) taskforce, which will meet for the first time in about 15 days.
