TAMBARAM: Norms laid down by the State Election Commission appear to have been thrown to the winds during the last day of nominations for posts to the various local bodies in the southern suburbs of Chennai. Politicians had the last laugh as they made a mockery of security arrangements by managing to elbow past policemen trying to bring maintain order at the Municipalities and other local body offices. There were traffic snarls in the vicinity of almost all nomination centres. Autorickshaws and two-wheelers with their silencers unplugged and bursting of 10,000-wala crackers made sure that residents could not sit in peace in their homes, traders could not conduct business normally and law abiding citizens could not use the road properly. Restaurants near local body offices were packed beyond capacity with many of them seen preparing lunch for party cadres even after 4 p.m. Several cadres, cutting across party affiliations, were seen flocking the government wine stores and enquiries revealed that these shops had seen the best business today, ever since the nomination process began last week. Among the six municipalities in the southern suburbs, Pammal received a total of 198 nominations, including 199 independents for the posts of 21 councillors. Anakaputhur received 142, including 58 from independents for 18 councillors. Its present chairman Velayudham too has filed his nomination. In Pallavaram, 375 persons, including 96 independants have filed their papers including its chairman P. Dhan Singh for Ward No. 18. There are 42 wards. At Alandur, 308 persons have submitted their nomination papers, including R.S. Bharathi (Ward no. 18) who has been chairman here for three successive terms of the local body that has 42 wards. In Puzhuthivakkam, 100 people, including its chairman Pon Jagadeesan and 45 independents have submitted their nomination papers for 18 wards. In Tambaram, where there are 39 wards, 262 have submitted their papers, including 116 independents. Among rural local bodies, 13 people have filed their nominations for two posts of District Panchayat Ward Member and 158 have applied for the post of 24 Panchayat Union Ward Member. For the post of president for the 25 village panchayats in St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union, officials have received nominations from 150 people. Finally for the 237 ward member posts, officials have received nominations from 1,481 persons, more than half of them on the last day.
