Ramadoss ``shocked at crores of rupees being spent''

TAMBARAM: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder-leader S. Ramadoss has called for stringent norms for conduct of elections to students' unions in colleges, stating that polls organised in educational institutions entailed heavy expenditure these days.

Speaking during the 120th annual inauguration of 'Thamizh Peravai' of Madras Christian College in Tambaram on Wednesday, he said he was shocked to learn that crores of rupees were being spent on elections in some universities. Elections should be announced a few hours before they were conducted and only those candidates who excelled in academics and overall proficiency should contest for the various posts.

He regretted that in the present scenario, teachers of educational institutions were scared of students and indiscipline was on the rise among the educated youth.

The PMK leader also complained that Tamil teachers in many educational institutions did not train their students properly, particularly pronunciation. Whenever he or his organisation insisted on usage of Tamil, certain quarters rebuked him.

``But look around you. Tamil is not the language in governance, administration, judiciary and even in spirituality,'' he remarked.

Along with A.Janakiraman, Tambaram Municipal Chairman, Dr. Ramadoss unveiled the portraits of P.V.Ulaganathan and V.Krishnaswamy, former Heads of the Department of Tamil of the College.
