CHENNAI : The Kancheepuram district police have registered a case of murder against Shanti of Keezhkottaiyur village, who was tied to a lamp-post and beaten up by villagers on Monday.

A senior police officer told The Hindu here on Wednesday that enquiries had revealed that the woman had an illicit relationship with a man. Shanti confessed to having thrown her daughter into the well after learning that her daughter had come to know about the relationship.

A case has been registered over the tethering of the woman to a post.

Whether she was beaten or not is being probed, the officer said. Meanwhile, the Joint Action Council for Women condemned the manner in which the villagers had taken law into their own hands.

Such violence against women could spread to other villages and it could also have a negative influence on the minds of young boys, the council said.

It asked officials to take stern action against the guilty.
