CHENNAI
: Pachaiyappa's College students turned violent during a demonstration on campus, forcing the police to intervene on Wednesday.
One police constable was injured in the melee.
According to the students, they had gathered to protest under the SFI banner to seek reinstatement of a student suspended by the college authorities.
Police were called in when the protest threatened to take an ugly turn. College principal T V Rajendiran, in a press note issued here on Wednesday, said that a group of students led by R Stalin forcibly entered classrooms in the Arts Block and asked the students to come out and join the protest.
The teachers handling classes asked him to leave the room triggering heated arguments. Kilpauk police were called in to restore order.
But in the afternoon, a group of student sporting SFI badges entered the campus and went round shouting slogans against the college, principal, the government and the teachers. About 300 students assembled near the Arts Block portico and damaged the notice board by pelting stones. In the melee, a police constable was hurt.
In view of the violence, the college has decided to cancel the classes for the next two days, the principal's press note said.
