CHENNAI : An acupuncturist was arrested by the City Crime Branch police here on Wednesday and remanded to judicial custody along with five of his associates on charges of cheating. The CCB police said that the practitioner, Srinivasan (46) from Madurai, had been running an acupuncture clinic in K.R. Koil Street, West Mambalam since 1999 after having completed a three-year course in acupuncture in Cuddalore district. A senior CCB officer said Srinivasan had pocketed huge sums as commission from people looking for investments in their businesses, by promising to arrange the money from big-wigs. When he was unable to keep his word, he escaped from the scene. He had also taken several lakhs by promising admissions in medical colleges. Srinivasan had used the money to buy both movable and immovable properties. People who asked for the money to be returned were threatened with dire consequences, police said. Along with Srinivasan, police arrested his associates Julie Srinivasan (30), Jagatheesh (46), Johnson (42), Ashok Kumar (25) and S Satheesh (26). Police were acting on complaints received from Ayath Banu, K Abdul Salam and Dr Raviprakash that Srinivasan had cheated them. Police recovered properties worth Rs 85 lakh, including five cars valued Rs 15 lakh, five two-wheelers worth Rs 1.50 lakh, jewels worth Rs 3 lakh, 10 mobile handsets and Rs 5.25 lakh cash. Land documents and buildings worth Rs 60 lakh were also seized from him, a police press note said.
