Around the City

Power shutdown

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended in Kottivakkam, Saidapet East, Ashok Nagar, KK Nagar, Indira Nagar, Gopalpuram and Chetpet on Thursday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for maintenance work. Supply will be resumed before 5 p.m. if the work is completed.

Blood donation

Rotary Club of Madras Northwest organised a blood donation camp at Cognizant Technology Solution (CTS) at Cathedral Road office in association with Rotary Central of TTK-VHS Blood Bank on Tuesday.

Employees of CTS had donated more than 50 units of blood.

The NSS Unit of Loyola College organised a blood donation camp on September 27.

About 120 units of blood were given by the donors.

Eye screening

Rajan Eye Care Hospital in association with the Rotary Club of Madras T. Nagar conducted a free eye screening camp at Sree Krishna Moolchand Vidyalaya School, Thirunindravur, recently. Over 200 patients were screened.

Free medicines and spectacles were arranged for about 30 patients.

Free computer course

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai Kendra's Gandhi Insitute of Computer Education and Information Technology is offering a free computer course for the economically backward unemployed in the age group 18-35 years. The courses offered are DTP, Accounts Assistants Course, Visual Basic Net and Autocad LT. Application forms for the next course from Novembner 1 will be made available up to October 10 on a payment of Rs. 50 towards processing fee at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, 18-20-22 East Mada Street, Mylapore. Eligible candidates will have to do an aptitude test on October 15.

Office-bearers elected

The Gandhinagar club held its elections for 2006-2007. The new president is B. Venkatesh and the vice-president, Manoj Thangavelu.

Narayana Seva camp

Hindu Mission Hospital conducted its 314th Narayana Seva Camp 2006 at Salamangalam, Padappai village. About 200 patients were treated.

Inter-college cultural festival

The Hindi department of DRBCC Hindu College (Evening) recently conducted an inter-college cultural festival. D.G. Vaishnav College emerged overall winner among 21 colleges that took part in the competitions.

Head, Hindi department of Loyola College LVK Sridharan, Income Tax Commissioner (Investigation) Girish Narain Pandey and writer Souri Rajan were present on the occasion.

Navarathiri pooja

The Thiruvanmiyur Sakti Samvardhini Sameeksha, along with other city socio-cultural organisations will perform special poojas for Saraswati, Lakshmi and Sakthi for Navarathiri at Marundeeswarar temple.
