AGAINST PENALTY: A police officer detains Yasin Malik (left), chairman of the JKLF, during a demonstration in Srinagar on Wednesday. Photo: AP
Srinagar: More than 70 protesters were wounded and several others arrested after violent demonstrations erupted in many parts of the Kashmir valley on Wednesday over a Delhi court's order to execute, on October 20, Mohammad Afzal, the mastermind behind the December 13, 2001 Parliament attack. The breakaway Hurriyat Conference, led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, has called for a general strike in the valley on Friday in protest against the order. Several Dukhtaran-e-Millat (Daughters of Faith) activists took out a protest march here and clashed with the police before being arrested.
Teargas shells
Police baton-charged and fired teargas shells to disperse a violent mob at Maisuma. Several Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leaders, including chairman Yasin Malik, were arrested near the headquarters of the JKLF in the heart of the city. All shops and business establishments in the entire Lal Chowk area, the nerve centre of the summer capital, were closed soon after the protests erupted. Demonstrators indulged in stone-pelting and burning of tyres. The injured were admitted to hospitals. UNI
