Sanitation contractors threaten to stop work

Bills not cleared by MCH citing non-payment of emoluments to workers
|
HYDERABAD:
Private sanitation contractors involved in sweeping roads and lifting garbage sent alarm bells ringing in MCH when they threatened to halt operations from Wednesday night if their pending bills were not cleared.
Bills normally cleared in 10 days have been held up since May as the contractors allegedly did not pay the requisite security deposits, provident fund and ESI contributions for workers. There was also a dispute on amount of garbage being lifted in each unit.
Minimum wage
Despite official assurances on Wednesday that bills will be cleared for two months, contractors have refused to budge. Contractors had earlier urged the administration to clear bills after cutting the requisite amounts for PF and ESI, which did not find favour with the administration.
There are 170 private contractors for sweeping roads for about 137 units. Each worker is supposed to be paid a minimum wage of Rs. 2,386 other than the PF and ESI contributions.
But, there have been allegations that contractors were not deploying sufficient number of workers while supervisory officials look the other way.
