Shortage of vehicles hampers garbage collection

KOCHI: The Kudumbasree units, which are collecting waste in Thripunithura, will soon buy one more vehicle to solve the problem of carrying the waste to the dumping ground.

The units engaged in this enterprise were finding it difficult to dump waste because of lack of garbage transportation vehicle. It had become a major problem in their working, as they had to wait for hours guarding the waste just for the vehicle to arrive. They could not leave the place too as it would soon turn into a dumping yard if the garbage was not cleared the very day it was collected.

Four Kudumbasree units engaged in collecting garbage were sharing one vehicle. With increased workload, the units were finding it hard to share a vehicle. All the works were delayed, said Mini Shibu, leader of one Kudumbasree unit.

With the municipality having limited number of vehicles with one lorry and one tractor with trailer, it is not able to spare its vehicles for Kudumbasree's work. Each unit collects waste from about 650 houses and some flats. ``Wastes from flats are dumped at one place, so we do not have to go to each house in a flat,'' Mrs. Shibu said.

The municipality helped a lot in getting the vehicle, she said. The Kudumbasree units were also geared up to celebrate the fifth anniversary of launching the enterprise in Thripunithura on October 2. There were three units involved in collecting waste from households in three different parts of the town. A fourth unit was formed to collect waste from wedding halls. This unit had also bought a vehicle.

Since their work was seasonal, they were also entrusted to collect waste from bigger establishments like hotels, hospitals and markets.
