`Hindi poems opposed imperialism'

KOCHI : Noted critic Sivakumar Misra has said that contemporary Hindi poems have tried to resist the economic invasion by imperialist forces across the globe. Delivering the keynote address at a three-day seminar organised by the Department of Hindi at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit here on Wednesday, Dr. Mishra said Hindi poems were able to evolve a collective resistance during the time of political colonisation. — Staff Reporter

Court orders auction of vessel

Kochi: The Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court has directed the CBI and Coast Guard to take steps to auction the French vessel Galathee seized by the Coast Guard in connection with the conduct of unauthorised marine survey in sea off Kochi. According to the CBI, the unauthorised marine survey was conducted during December 1995 by Francis Clavel and Elle Philippe, French nationals, and Captain S.M. Furtado, a Goan. — Staff Reporter

One detained

NEDUMBASSERY: The Emigration wing at the Cochin International Airport here on Wednesday detained a passenger on charge of possessing forged passport. M. Ummar (39), hailing from Kasaragod, was detained when he arrived here from Dubai on a Mahan Air flight, W5 1127, in the morning. According to sources, he was carrying the passport of one Falul Hamad Badigudde of Karnataka, by replacing the photograph. — A Correspondent

Certificate course

KOCHI: A four-month certificate course in Human Rights and Criminology at St. Teresa's College was inaugurated by D. Sreedevi, former Women's Commission chairperson. Department of Sociology will conduct the course. Speaking after the inauguration, Ms. Sreedevi said that human right was a fundamental right of each individual and awareness about it was essential. — Staff Reporter

Pongala festival

Kochi: The pongala festival at Kaloor Mahaveda Temple will begin on Friday. NSS general secretary P.K. Narayana Paniker will inaugurate the programmes at 6 p.m. The festival will conclude on October 6. — Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Kerala Brahmana Sabha will start new batches for music classes on Vijayadasmi day. New batches of tailoring classes will also begin on the day. Interested persons can register at the sabha's office near Ernakulam Siva Temple.
