Plea to include new airport in CBI probe

Special Correspondent

  • ORR is not a separate entity but a continuum of Shamshabad International Airport
  • `People in power' along with their friends, families purchased land at throwaway prices

HYDERABAD: The Forum For A Sustainable Environment (FFASE) has demanded that the CBI inquiry ordered into the Outer Ring Road alignment include the International Airport, Inner Ring Road and HITEC City at Madhapur.

In an appeal sent to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the FFASE convenor S. Jeevananda Reddy said ORR was not a separate entity but a continuum of Shamshabad International Airport -- SIA (later named as Rajiv Gandhi International Airport).

The ORR along with SIA was published in the draft Master Plan 2020 released by Hyderabad Urban Development Authority in January 2003.

    Benami names

The `people in power' along with their friends and families had bought hundreds of acres of land at throwaway prices from farmers on their and benami names.

Hence this should be included in the terms of reference of the CBI inquiry.

The CBI should be asked to ferret out the truth concerning the alignment of Shamshabad International Airport done in violation of G.O. Ms. No. 111 M.A. of March 8, 1996 and the Supreme Court Order of December 1, 2000 banning certain activities within the 10-km radius of the full reservoir level of Osmansagar and Himayatsagar.

    Beneficiaries

It should also probe the beneficiaries of Inner Ring Road especially alignment on the old Mumbai highway-Toli Chowki stretch and of the HITEC City at Madhapur, he said.

It was unfortunate that the political parties were only looking at who got how much but least worried about the damage they have caused to the environment in the name of development.
