Man held for attempting immolation

NEW DELHI: A 35-year-old man allegedly planning to set himself afire outside the residence of Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil was arrested by the Tughlaq Road police here on Wednesday. The police seized a bottle of petrol from his possession.

It was around 3-15 p.m. that Mahender Singh, a resident of Jahangirpuri in North-West Delhi, was spotted near Mr. Patil's residence and overpowered by the police.

During interrogation, Mahender alleged that he was unnecessarily being harassed by the police in a dowry case registered against him 18 months ago on the basis of a complaint lodged by his wife's brother. Mahender's wife had allegedly committed suicide by setting herself afire.

Man arrested on murder charge

NEW DELHI: A 38-year-old man allegedly hammered his roommate to death at Samaipur Badli in North-West Delhi on Tuesday. The accused has been arrested.

According to the police, the murder took place in the evening when Parvinder picked up an argument with his roommate Gurdeep.

One killed in wall collapse

NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old man was killed when a wall collapsed on him at Deoli Gaon in South Delhi on Wednesday.

The mishap took place around 11-45 a.m. when Abdul Sattar, a native of Bihar, was standing near the wall.

Electrician dies in elevator

NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old electrician was found dead with his neck trapped between the doors of an elevator at Dwarka Sector V in South-West Delhi on Wednesday.

Around 6-30 a.m., a driver working for one of the occupants of Sabka Ghar Apartments heard the screams coming from the first floor. As he reached there, he saw the building electrician, Tuntun Roy, stuck in the lift with his neck trapped between the doors. Some other occupants reached there and tried to pull Tuntun out of the elevator but to no avail. By the time he could be rescued, Tuntun had died.

Fire in Connaught Place building

NEW DELHI: A fire broke out on the third floor of a building near Connaught Place here on Wednesday afternoon.

The fire was reported from the multi-storey Ambadeep Building situated on Kasturba Gandhi Marg at around 1-20 p.m., according to Fire Department officials.

Meeting of ICCR's core body

NEW DELHI: The newly constituted Core General Assembly and Governing Body of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations met here on Wednesday under the chairmanship of ICCR president Karan Singh.

Dr. Singh gave an overview of ICCR's enhanced activities in the past one year and its future programmes including the "Festival of India" in Brussels come October and the celebration of the "India-Japan Friendship Year" in Japan in early 2007.

He also stressed the need for ICCR to be provided with adequate funds to enable it to fulfil its mandate.

New arrival

NEW DELHI: To improve the lot of slum dwellers, a UN-Habitat book titled "Social Marketing of Sanitation" was launched here over the weekend.

The book has been prepared with a special contribution by Sulabh Sanitation Movement founder Bindeshwar Pathak.
