NEW DELHI: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has urged doctors to spread the message of healthy lifestyle to prevent heart disease. Dr. Kalam made the appeal while giving away lifetime achievement awards to doctors at the concluding ceremony of the World Congress on Clinical and Preventive Cardiology (WCCPC) at Rashtrapati Bhavan here on Monday. The President said in a country like India, prevention of coronary artery disease through positive and healthy lifestyle intervention would be a boon for the masses, who cannot afford by-pass surgery. He also advised the doctors to inform their patients about healthy lifestyles and use mass media to spread the message. A healthy lifestyle regimen should be patient friendly, safe and cost-effective, he added. Dr. Kalam gave away awards to renowned heart doctors Satish Kumar Gupta, Naresh Trehan, S.K. Parashar, H.K. Chopra, W. Selvamurthy, Ashok Seth, Mina K. Chung (US) and Sandeep Gupta (UK). Earlier, the WCCPC was inaugurated by Dr. Kalam at Mount Abu in Rajasthan through video conferencing from Madurai on September 22. The Conference, hosted by Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya, also witnessed a discussion on the findings of the report of a project "Abu Healthy Heart Trial Project."
