NEW DELHI: Captain Vishal Bhandral, who died during counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir on Tuesday, will be cremated with full military honours here on Thursday, the day he was supposed to return home after completing his tenure in the Valley. The 25-year-old had once escaped with bullet injuries during counter-insurgency operations in Assam. Army officers here said Capt Bhandral of Garhwal Rifles was on his last operation in the Valley near Bandipura in Baramulla district. Wednesday was supposed to be his "dining out'' evening when he was to formally bid farewell to his comrades before going home on leave and then taking up a new assignment in Gwalior. Officers said as his section surrounded a house, a militant took a few women and children as shield and began firing at the troops. Capt Bhandral refrained from opening fire in order to avoid killing civilians. The first automatic burst proved fatal for him. His men then chased and gunned down two militants. Capt Bhandral's father works in the public sector Bank of Baroda. The Captain was unmarried.
