Man creates flutter on court premises

Staff Reporter

Fed up with delay in disposal of his case

MADURAI: P.R.V. Solaiappan (72) of Idayapudur in Pudukkottai district, created a flutter on the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court premises on Wednesday when he was found moving around with a bottle of kerosene to commit self-immolation.

Suspicious over the activities of the old man who came to the court by 11 a.m., a constable, standing guard at the main entrance, frisked him and found him was carrying the bottle.

Even before the septuagenarian could attempt to end his life, the constable prevented him from taking the drastic step. Immediately, the matter was reported to the local police as well as court officials.

On enquiry, the old man said he was annoyed over delay in disposing of a few cases between him and his business partner. He told that he was plying a private bus in Tiruchi in partnership with another person.

The partner had cheated him and a civil suit was filed before a lower court in Musiri in Tiruchi district.

Even as the case was being heard for the past 24 years, the partner sold the bus and the old man filed a petition before the Madurai Bench last year, which was also pending adjudication. Hence, he attempted to resort to this extreme step.

However, the court officials did not prefer a complaint with the police considering his age and physical condition.

The old man, who struggled to walk besides suffering from poor eyesight, was relieved after sufficient warning.

The court officials promised to take up his case for final hearing as early as possible under the special privilege for senior citizens.
