CHENNAI: Bharatiya Janata Party vice-president M. Venkaiah Naidu has urged the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre to drop the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) representative from the Cabinet following Thomas P. Joseph Commission's findings that some activists of the League were actively involved in the Marad carnage in Kerala in 2003. Talking to newsmen here on Thursday, Mr. Naidu said the Congress and the Communist parties, which allied with the IUML one time or the other, should come out clean and make their stand clear. He demanded stringent action against officials and the then MLAs who were allegedly behind the carnage, which claimed nine lives. The BJP leader, who is heading a five-member committee appointed by the party to conduct an in-depth study of special economic zones (SEZ) in the country, said the panel would submit its report within 15 days. Based on the recommendations, a policy would be formulated by the party for its future guidance. The party agreed in principle on the need to set up SEZs as they would invite foreign investments, provide employment to local people and strengthen the economy.
