Somnath seeks support for Tharoor

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, currently on a visit to Greece, has sought the country's support for Shashi Tharoor, India's candidate for United Nations Secretary-General's post.

Mr. Chatterjee, who leads an Indian Parliamentary delegation, was honoured with the Medal of Honour of the Greek Parliament by his counterpart there, a Lok Sabha release said here on Thursday.

``There has been strong support from Greece for India's candidature for the Permanent membership in United Nations.

India's consistent position on Cyprus and its effort to build and strengthen good relations with the countries in its region came in for praise," the release said.

During their first ever bilateral visit, the Indian delegation met the presiding Officer of the Greek Parliament Anna Benaki-Psarouda, President of the Hellenic Republic (Greece) Karolos Papoulias and Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, who is also the head of the ruling New Democratic Party. — PTI
