CHENNAI: Children of Kasimedu now hero-worship Pulithevan, Marudupandiyan and Veerapandiya Kattabomman. But until a month ago, not many of them knew who they were. Thanks to a history exhibition organised by Centre for Development of Women's Studies (CDaWS), a non-governmental organisation, Corporation school students in Kasimedu now have historical facts on their fingertips. Inaugurating the exhibition, Information and Publicity Minister Parithi Ilamvazhuthi said it provided a great opportunity for children to learn about Tamil Nadu's history and culture. M. Dasaradevi recited the popular version of Veerapandiaya Kattabomman's dialogue (in the film role played by Shivaji Ganesan). Her father is a fisherman while her mother manages the home. "We referred to many books, read and used the information to make these charts," she said, pointing to her project. About 50 children from 10 schools have been working together for the past one month under the guidance of CDaWS volunteers. Students had also made models of different monuments in the city."This is an initiative to create awareness among children about our cultural history," said Mirunalini.F.X., director, CDaWS. The exhibition is open to the public on Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Mahakavi Bharathiyar Illam, T.P. Koil Street, Triplicane.
