Centre must intervene in UNI affairs: CPI(M)

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has asked the Government to intervene in the affairs of United News of India and prevent the ``surreptitious change'' in the management in which most of the other shareholders have not been taken into confidence.

Reacting to reports that the UNI board has inducted the Zee Group chairman and his associates into the board, the party Polit Bureau said the Zee Group was now poised to take over the news agency.

Apprehensions

This has been done despite widespread apprehensions that a news agency, which was set up as a Section 25 company, should not come under the control of any single business house.

The party said there were grounds to believe that the transaction was inimical to the future of the UNI as a news agency and for its role as a premier wire service organisation.
