Afzal's mother to appeal to President

Special Correspondent

DOABGAH (SOPORE): Ayesha, mother of Afzal Guru, who is sentenced in the Parliament attack case, on Thursday said she would appeal for clemency to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in case she failed to persuade her son to do so.

"I am a mother in distress. My other son Riyaz Ahmad died two months ago due to a heart ailment. I do not want to lose another son," said Ayesha at her residence here, which has seen a steady stream of visitors, expressing solidarity with the family since Wednesday.

She, along with Afzal's father, wife and son, are leaving for Delhi on Sunday to meet Afzal.

"I am hopeful that President Kalam will take a positive view on the matter," she said.

Earlier, Afzal's wife, Tabassum, said he had refused to sign the mercy petition.

A relative of Afzal has left for Delhi to consult legal experts
