Mulford meets Karunanidhi

CHENNAI: U.S. Ambassador to India David C. Mulford met Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence here.

Answering questions from presspersons after the meeting, he said the U.S. hoped negotiations would continue between the Sri Lankan Government and the LTTE. "The U.S. is very much hopeful of continued negotiations there (in Sri Lanka) that will bring about a system that will ensure stability and peace and stem the flow of people (refugees)," he said.

U.S. Consul General in South India David T. Hopper said he was happy that the case relating to human bomb threat call to the U.S. Consulate here was solved. — Special Correspondent

Electronic database of biodiversity resources

MADURAI: The National Biodiversity Authority is creating an electronic database of bio-resources in the country to document the unique indigenous knowledge and local attractions in different regions. It is named Indian Biodiversity Information System. The first phase of a pilot project had been taken up at a cost of Rs. 5 crore, S. Kannaiyan, Chairman of National Biodiversity Authority said. The objective is to take steps for conservation, sustainable use, prevention of exploitation of bio-resources and for knowledge sharing. — Staff Reporter

MetroCorp unveils township project

COIMBATORE: MetroCorp Housing Corporation and JURONG International Group, Singapore, have jointly announced an integrated township project, called MetroCorp Monte Vista, for Coimbatore. The project cost is expected to be about Rs. 500 crore. The township will come up on 40 acres along the Sundakamuthur Road and will have apartments, IT work spaces, superspeciality hospital, school, shopping mall and a club. The construction is expected to start in a month and completed in three years. According to Deepak Krishnappa, Chairman and CEO of MetroCorp, and Rao Munukutla, CEO of JURONG Infrastructure (India) Private Limited, the project will be completed in phases. The president and CEO of the JURONG International Group, Tang Tat Kwong, unveiled the model. — Staff Reporter

Posthumous honour for tribal

UDHAGAMANDALAM: The Centre has chosen Seegan, a tribal, for the Amritha Devi Bishnoi National Award for Wildlife Conservation, according to the Nilgiris Wildlife Warden, Rakesh Kumar Dogra. The award includes a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh. Mr. Dogra said Seegan died in a shoot out with poachers at Chickahallah in the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary. Seegan's daughter would receive the award in New Delhi on October 10. Arrangements were being made for sending the girl to New Delhi.— Special Correspondent

RBI to work on Saturday

CHENNAI: All the departments of Reserve Bank of India in Chennai, which normally function on Saturdays, will conduct business as usual on Saturday (September 30), F.R. Joseph, regional director (Tamil Nadu) of RBI, said. — Staff Reporter

Office-bearers elected

CHENNAI: A. Shanmugavelayuthan has been elected president of the Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association for 2006-08. K. Gopalakrishnan (general secretary) and C.K. Mohan (vice-president- Chennai region), S. Sridharan (VP-Tiruchi), E.C. Senniappan (VP- Coimbatore) and K.R. Rajamanickam (VP-Madurai), and L. Meiyappan (Treasurer) were also elected at the 40th annual general body meeting of the Association here on Wednesday. — Staff Reporter

Launching of scheme postponed

PUDUKOTTAI: The launching of the scheme scheduled for October 2 to give cash assistance to unemployed persons registered with the Employment Exchange has been postponed. This was due to model code of conduct coming in force for the local body polls, the Collector S. J. Chiru said in a press release.

Held under Goondas Act

NAGAPATTINAM: G. Raju (56) of Velipalayam area here, a habitual offender in selling ganja, was arrested under the Goondas Act under the orders of Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar on Thursday, based on the report of the Narcotics wing police. He has been lodged in the jail for one year.

CDs seized

TIRUCHI: In separate incidents, the City Police arrested two persons on the charge of possessing pirated compact discs of latest Tamil films as well as obscene movies on Wednesday. Mahalingam (46) and Sahul Hameed (30) - were held at Chinthamani bazaar and Anna Pavala Vizha building respectively. A total of 33 pirated CDs were allegedly seized from the duo.

70-year-old man killed

TIRUCHI: Durairaj, 70, was killed and three women sustained injuries in a car-lorry collision on the Tiruchi - Dindigul National Highway at Inamkulathur on Wednesday . Durairaj along with his wife and two others was proceeding in a car to Dindigul from Tiruchi when the mishap occurred. The injured have been admitted to a private hospital here, according to police sources.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 100.52 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 12,514 cusecs and the outflow 16,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

AIADMK candidate, two others held

Tuticorin: The South police on Thursday arrested Dharmaraj (42), an AIADMK candidate contesting municipal elections, along with two others for threatening each other.

Police said Dharmaraj, a candidate for ward number 45 in Tuticorin municipality, threatened Thirumalairaj and Gopal, who in turn threatened him with dire consequences, over some personal dispute.

Couple end life over family dispute

Tuticorin: A couple committed suicide at Sattankulam on Wednesday evening, allegedly owing to family dispute.

Police said while S Kandasamy (30), a farmer, ended his life by hanging from a tree , his wife, Issakkiammal, took the extreme step by jumping into a well. The Sattankulam police are investigating.

Woman commits suicide

Nagercoil: Rajapathi Ammal (50) committed suicide by hanging herself inside her house on Agastheeswaram South Street near Kanyakumari on Thursday.

According to police, Rajapathi Ammal took the extreme step owing to acute stomach pain. The police have registered a case and are investigating. — Staff Reporter

128 file nominations

ERODE: Tiruchengode Municipality, for its 33 wards received a total of 128 nominations. The filing of nominations came to a close at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. For two wards in the Namakkal District Panchayat, 10 nominations were received. And, for the 14-ward Tiruchengode Panchayat Union, 63 nominations were received. Among them, in Devanakurichi, DMK candidate, R. Manickam, was elected unopposed. In Pallipalayam Municipality, 117 nominations were filed. In Komarapalayam Municipality, 177 nominatins were received, with Tuesday alone recording 160. On the last on Tuesday, the Congress and DMK had differences of opinion regarding contesting in certain wards. This saw a DMK candidate file nomination in the last miute for Ward 21. - Staff Reporter

Killed in accident

SALEM: Murugan, driver of a lorry was killed on the spot when the vehicle lost control and barged into a roadside shop near Omalur on Wednesday night. Three others who were travelling suffered injuries. According to police, the driver was under the influence of liquor. The injured have been admitted to the Omalur Government Hospital.

METTUR: Seven passengers

of a State Transport Corporation bus sustained injuries when it lost control and overturned near Neethipuram near here on Wednesday. The injured were treated as outpatients at the Mettur Government Hospital. - Staff Reporter
