BANGALORE: The State Government needs to take steps to tackle homosexuality and AIDS among the prison inmates, Karnataka High Court Judge V. Gopala Gowda has said. Speaking at the seminar on "Correction, reformation and rehabilitation of prisoners", Mr. Gopala Gowda said here on Thursday that homosexuality among some of the inmates was a result of long period of detachment from their life partners. The prison inmates should be allowed to meet their spouses more often, apart from being allowed to go on parole. Mr. Gopala Gowda said the State Government should increase the budget allocation for jails and prisons and permit appointment of doctors and psychologists for treating inmates with homosexuality and AIDS. Opinion of sociologists needs to be taken to tackle the issues of homosexuals and those suffering from AIDS. He asked the Department of Prisons to continue with the work of rehabilitating persons released from prisons. The State Government should give more emphasis on the rehabilitation work, which would help in bringing prisoners to the mainstream. Assistant Director-General of Police (Prisons) S.T. Ramesh spoke. Among others, the daylong seminar had presentations by Deputy Inspector-General of Prisons B.S. Abbai on "challenges and dilemmas in prison administration" and A.V. Chandrashekar, District and Sessions Judge, on "outlining the free legal aid schemes available to prisoners".
