Hyundai Motor India launches Verna

No plan to set up factory in Bangalore owing to high costs, says managing director


  • Plan to double production at Hyundai's plant in Chennai by next year
  • The company exports mainly to Eastern Europe, Africa, South America and Korea

    Bangalore: Hyundai Motor India launched Verna, a sedan, in Bangalore on Wednesday with an introductory price offer of Rs. 6.21 lakh, Rs. 6.36 lakh and Rs. 6.93 lakh for the three variants in petrol and Rs. 7.35 lakh for the diesel sedan.

    Announcing this here, Hyundai India managing director H.S. Lheem said there were plans to expand the capacity at its plant in Chennai from three lakh to six lakh units by next year and the company would be allocating 50 per cent each for domestic market and exports.

    "Our goal is to be exporter of small car from India."

    Presently, Hyundai India is exporting Santro and Accent and early next year would be exporting Getz.

    The company is exporting mainly to Eastern Europe, Africa, South America and Korea.

    The company is also planning an engine and transmission factory with 3.5 lakh unit capacity by mid-2008.

    He ruled out setting up the plant in Bangalore owing to high costs here.

    The choice now was between Hyderabad and Chennai, he said
