Thiruvananthapuram: The Rural police have arrested four persons in connection with the gangland murder of Binu, 30, who was hacked to death by an armed group at Vellaikonam in Malayinkeezh police station limits on September 19. The accused were identified as Roby Das alias `Thankuttan,'34; Binish alias `Chethu' Ratheesh, 26; Yassar Arafat, 27; and Shivan, 26. Circle Inspector, Kattakada, M. Saifudeen said Binu was killed for avenging the murder of `Motta' Ani, a gang leader who was hacked to death in a similar manner at Thaliyil, near Karamana, in the city on February 8. Binu was named as accused in the murder case along with `Chozhattukottai' Ambili who is suspected to have ordered the killing of `Motta' Ani. The gang leader was killed for attempting to disrupt the illicit spirit business dominated by Ambili in Malayinkeezh and Kattakada areas, the police said.
According to the police, the assailants were acting on the orders of Soju, brother-in-law of `Motta' Ani. The rival gang had information that Binu frequented the house of `Kanjavu' Ravi at Vellaikonam. Thankuttan, who lived in the area, had contacted `Motta' Ani's gang members and offered his help for avenging the murder of their leader. The police said the assailants camped at Thankuttan's house for four days, lying in wait for Binu. They sprang a "sudden and surprise" attack on Binu when he arrived at the spot for collecting the proceeds from the sale of illicit spirit in the area.
Secret inquiry
Binu was a close associate and "collection agent" of Ambili, according to the police. The police came to know of his murder only several hours after the occurrence. The local residents were in a state of fear unwilling to volunteer any information on the crime. The police, on the basis of a secret and painstaking inquiry, arrested the gang members. Three of the accused were absconding. Superintendent of Police (Rural) Yogesh Gupta headed the investigation.
