Call to form State Maritime Board

Staff Reporter

Quality training sought for maritime personnel

KOCHI: Organisers of the World Maritime Day celebration here on Thursday decided to take up with the State Government the formation of a `Kerala State Maritime Board' that would ensure that inland vessels were certified for safe operation under the guidance of Mercantile Marine Department representing the Director General of Shipping.

It was also recommended that pollution of inland waters caused by houseboats and tourism-related activities be reduced by incorporating effective anti-pollution measures similar to international regulations. Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University Jancy James urged maritime trade to help the poor and impoverished sections of society.

The endeavour of the maritime community is to see that the fruits of globalisation reach this needy section of society, she said inaugurating the Maritime Day celebration.

I.N. Bose, Senior Vice-President, Indian Register of Shipping, Mumbai, delivered the keynote address.
