KOCHI: The police arrested three persons on Thursday in connection with the waylaying of three jewellers and robbery of 19.5 kg of gold jewellery valued at Rs.1,61,26,500 in Kottayam on Wednesday. They were identified as Shiyaz, 20; Askar, 22, and Shakir alias Chekku, 28. The vital lead to the arrests was obtained when the police questioned Shivakumar, 41, the Malayali driver who was with the jewellers from Mumbai. Shivakumar belongs to Perumbavoor. It was found that Shiyaz, who is from Aluva and runs a shop on M.G. Road, arranged the group of four persons to commit the robbery. Following the lead provided by Shiyaz, the police arrested Askar and Chekku from Mattanchery. The police also recovered 12 kg of the stolen jewellery. Two more persons are to be arrested in connection with case. The police suspect one of the jewellers was involved in the crime. The arrests were made by a team led by S. Sreejith, Superintendent of Police, Kottayam. The other members of the team were V. Vijayan, Circle Inspector, Pampady; V.G. Vinod Kumar, Circle Inspector, Kottayam East; head constables Thampi Jacob, Rajagopal and Varghese and constables Suresh and Ajith.
