`Great Music and People's Tragedies'

A classical music show titled "Great Music and People's Tragedies" -- dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Beslan tragedy and the 100th birth anniversary of the famous Russian composer Dmitriy Shostakovich -- was held in the Capital recently. Organised jointly by the Russian Centre for Science and Culture and the Delhi Music Society, the show saw the participation of noted opera singer Larisa Rai, winner of a number of international vocal competitions, and the Russian teacher at the Piano School, Svetlana Radashkevich.

Vocal and instrumental music compositions by renowned masters such as Georgio Caccini, Gerge Handel, Franz Shubert, Mikhail Glinka, Nikolay Rimskiy-Korsakov, Pyotr Chaikovskioy and Sergey Rahmaninov constituted the presentation.

Dmitriy Shostakovich (1906-1975) was a Russian composer of the Soviet period. Despite having a complex relationship with the Soviet Government, he remained the most popular composer of his generation and received a number of accolades and State awards. He also served in the Supreme Soviet. His greatest works are generally considered to be his symphonies and string quartets, 15 of each; other works include operas, six concertos and a substantial quantity of film music.

Dmitriy Shostakovich's "Prelude and Fugue in A-minor", George Handel's "Aria of Almira", Georgio Caccini's "Amarilli", Segey Rakhmanimov's "Lilac", Pyotr Chaikovskiy's "No More Words, Oh, My Friend" and Franz Shubert's "Ave Maria" were performed brilliantly by the artistes. -- Madhur Tankha
