JNU Students' Union urged to withdraw agitation

Dean's assurance to take up the fellowship matter with UGC

NEW DELHI: The Dean of Students' Welfare at Jawaharlal Nehru University, R.K.Kale, has appealed to the JNU Students' Union to withdraw their agitation and restore normalcy on the campus.

Despite the University administration bowing down to student pressure and agreeing "in principle'' to JNUSU's demand to increase the amount offered under the merit-cum-means scholarship scheme, the student union has continued its agitation.

"I again assure the JNU students that we will keep pursuing the matter with University Grants Commission and Ministry of Human Resource Development for enhancement of the fellowship for the students of JNU and as soon as the positive response is received from them, the University will take appropriate action to revise the fellowship accordingly,'' said Prof. Kale. "In a meeting with Acting Vice-Chancellor and other senior officials of the University held on Wednesday, the student union leadership, rather than appreciating the gesture of the University towards their demands, kept insisting on raising the fellowship amount," he said. "As has been explained time and again, the University administration is sympathetic and agrees in principle with the demand of student union. The University has already sent its request to UGC, MHRD and Ministry of Social Justice for recurring grant for the purpose, however, no response has been received from them.''

Meanwhile, JNUSU vice-president Dhananjay said: "We are continuing our indefinite hunger strike in the University and till date 222 students have sat on relay hunger strike and nine students have been on indefinite hunger strike for the past seven days. The dialogue with the Acting Vice-Chancellor has not moved forward. In view of this we are intensifying our agitation and have given a call for a mass hunger strike at the Administration Block from Thursday night. We will also have a massive sit-in at the Administration Block from Friday morning.''
