Builder held on cheating charges

NEW DELHI: A 58-year-old builder has been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch of Delhi Police on charges of cheating several Delhi University lecturers by selling them flats at Burari in North Delhi without clearing dues of over Rs. 23 lakhs towards the Delhi Jal Board. The accused is a former district commander of Delhi Home Guard.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Prabhakar, the EOW received complaints from Nisha Bala and 23 others who had bought flats from Pawan Gupta, managing director of Hoovers Builders, at Burari. In the brochures and other related documents, Gupta allegedly claimed that the flats were free from all dues.

When the buyers applied for a fresh water connection, the Delhi Jal Board informed them that dues amounting to over Rs. 23 lakhs were to be cleared on account of misuse and other charges.

The police also suspect that the flats were not constructed with proper authorisation.

Acting on the complaints, a team under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police P.K.Mishra arrested Gupta. During interrogation, he allegedly disclosed that he had colluded with some Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials to carry out the illegal works.

Two arrested on murder charge

NEW DELHI: Two young men have been arrested by the Special Staff of the South Delhi police for alleged involvement in a case of murder-cum-carjacking at Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh. A country-made firearm was allegedly recovered from their possession.

Acting on a tip-off that two persons would come to Sarita Vihar to commit some crime, a team led by Inspector Rajender Singh laid a trap and arrested Sangram Tiwari and Vinod Tiwari

Alleged bid to commit suicide

NEW DELHI: An 18-year-old girl whose relatives did not approve of her affair with a neighbour allegedly jumped off the third floor of the Rohini court complex here on Thursday soon after her lover's bail application was turned down by a city court.

She has been admitted to Saroj Hospital with multiple fractures and her condition is stated to be serious.

Charge-sheet against two IIT engineers

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday filed a charge-sheet against an assistant executive engineer, Rafat Jamal, and a junior engineer, Pradeep Sharma, of the Electrical Department of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, for allegedly accepting a bribe from a contractor.

According to the CBI, Jamal and Sharma had accepted a bribe of Rs. 3,500 from the contractor on March 22 for awarding a contract in his favour. The contractor had informed the CBI which caught the two officers after laying a trap.

Navaratri celebrations

NEW DELHI: Ganesh Sewa Samaj Mayur Vihar Phase II here is organising Navaratri celebrations up to October 2 at Shri Karunya Maha Ganapathy Temple.

"Maha Chandi homam" on Friday and Sunday will be performed by Sivacharyars of the renowned Sri Kalikamba Temple, Chennai. Other programmes include Vishnu Sahasranama Parayanam on Sunday and Aksharabhyasam on Monday.
