Need for safe drinking water and sanitation stressed

  • Rs. 3,245-crore civic infrastructure improvement proposal unveiled
  • Chief Minister reviews performance of civic bodies surrounding twin cities

HYDERABAD: The State Government has unveiled a massive Rs. 3,245-crore civic infrastructure improvement plan for the 12 municipalities abutting the State capital.

Of this, Rs. 1,025 crores was earmarked for drinking water provision, Rs. 1,450 crores for laying underground sewage network, Rs. 470 crores for sanitation works and Rs. 300 crores for constructing storm water drains.

"Detailed project reports are ready and the necessary funds will be tapped from the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission, the World Bank and other sources," Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said here on Thursday.

The Commissioner, Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad, and the Commissioner, Municipal Administration, would supervise the infrastructure works.

Dr. Reddy was reviewing the status and performance of 12 municipalities surrounding the twin cities at a high-level meeting attended by Municipal Administration Minister Koneru Ranga Rao, Mines Minister Sabita Indra Reddy and senior officials.

The Chief Minister wanted the Commissioners to accord the highest priority to safe drinking water, sewerage and sanitation facilities in the much-neglected municipalities.

The surrounding municipalities should be developed on a par with the State capital in all respects — be it quality of services or living environment.

He directed MCH Commissioner Sanjay Jaju to supervise and coordinate the removal of solid waste in the surrounding municipalities also in addition to the MCH area.

Dr. Reddy wanted the Commissioners to come out with a time-bound action plan to remove illegal constructions and unauthorised layouts.

Pointing out that the fast growing Seri Lingampally Municipality, in which several prestigious information technology and business enterprises were located, lacked a basic sewerage network, the Chief Minister directed officials to begin works on the underground sewerage system immediately.

Secretary, Municipal Administration, S.P. Singh, Secretary, Finance, Ramesh Kumar, Ranga Reddy district Collector L. Premchandra Reddy, HUDA Managing Director Jayesh Ranjan and Commissioners of the 12 municipalities were present.
