THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said deaths due to chikungunya have occurred in the State and department officials have misled Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy. Making a statement in the Assembly in reply to a letter from Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy seeking clarification on the issue on Thursday, Mr. Achuthanandan said the officials who misled Mr. Chandy, former Chief Minister A.K. Antony and former Agriculture Minister K.R. Gouri on the Endosulfan issue during the tenure of the UDF Government, misled Ms. Sreemathy too. Following contradictory reports about the deaths due to the disease, he decided to garner first-hand information and visited the hospitals in Alappuzha district and found that 3,000 persons were hospitalised.
