Musharraf: Osama is in Afghanistan

New York: Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has said he believed that Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden was hiding in the Kunar province of Afghanistan, possibly with the help of Afghan warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.

He said Osama had not died of typhoid, as claimed by a French intelligence agency last week. Gen. Musharraf said: ``I don't know. Unless I am sure I never say anything. If they have some source they should tell us. At least our intelligence does not know anything.''

Gen. Musharraf claimed that Osama's presence in the Afghanistan province was backed by inputs from Pakistan intelligence. He also dispelled the suggestion that insurgency in Afghanistan was being carried out from the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.

While brandishing a recent U.N. report, he read out its finding that the insurgency in Afghanistan was ``being conducted mostly by Afghans operating inside Afghanistan's borders''.

``In Kunar province it is Gulbuddin Hekmatyar who is operating,'' Gen. Musharraf said, adding: ``There must be some linkages.'' — ANI
