Bangalore: Chairman of the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) Sam Pitroda on Thursday announced that a portal to facilitate exchange of information on all matters related to water was being developed and underlined the need for similar public portals in the sectors of energy, education, environment etc. The public portal was being developed by the foundation run by NKC member and chief executive officer of Infosys Nandan Nilekani. Addressing the Infovision Knowledge Summit, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, through videoconference from Chicago, Dr. Pitroda said if there had to be real economic growth of the country, access to knowledge in these areas was essential. The commission, he mentioned, was looking at how quickly a national knowledge network a high-bandwidth, high-capacity virtual highway could be established connecting universities, libraries, medical institutions, science and technology labs and research and development units across the country. There was excess capacity available with telecom players such as BSNL, Bharti, Reliance and Tata and the commission would look at how to leverage that. Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju said with the strides made in the field of information technology and growth being witnessed in various sectors, the country was in a position to take up the challenges in the field of knowledge management.
