Certain rules are to be observed, only in the breach. For instance, traffic rules that are invariably flouted with impunity, throwing to winds even the directives declared through boards put up prominently, by the police. Last week, vehicle users in Kozhikode city heaved a sigh of relief. The authorities conceded to a long-time demand of the public to bring some semblance of traffic discipline at the Fourth Gate in the city. The traffic police posted a constable at the Fourth Gate level-crossing to prevent lorries and truckers from taking that route, in violation of a board there, banning their entry. But the measure proved to be a short-lived. The man failed to turn up after a few days. The traffic jams and confusion at the level-crossing continue, much to the discomfort of small vehicle users as high-loaded trucks pass the way, causing traffic snarls and preventing smooth flow of vehicles. The Assistant Commissioner, City Traffic, promised to look into the matter immediately. Otherwise, it would be better for the authorities, to remove that board banning truckers from entering the road.
