CHENNAI:
The police on Thursday chased a lorry that was being driven rashly and arrested the cleaner, who was driving under the influence of alcohol, and the driver.
The chase began in the early hours of Thursday when the Kalmandapam traffic police alerted the night patrol about a tanker zigzagging on the road at high speed.
The patrol tried to intercept the tanker near the Central Station, but it raced along Pallavan Salai, Chintadripet and the Cooum embankment. Finally, it came to a stop on the tracks at the Park Railway Station, where the police caught up with it.
It took the railway authorities and the police three hours to remove the tanker from the tracks.
Police said the driver, Vadivelu (35), of Vellore district, and cleaner Ramesh Mayavaram (30) had come from Karnataka to load edible oil from the Manali depot. On being told the loading could be carried out only on Thursday morning, they drove to Royapuram where they consumed liquor.
As it was past midnight, rail traffic was not affected, the police said. The driver and the cleaner were remanded to judicial custody.
