CHENNAI: The textile town of Tirupur, famous for its cotton knitwear, is depending on Italy to impart knowledge about the latest fashion trends in garments.

It also wants Italy, a leader in design and fashion industry, to assist in establishing a Textile and Apparel Fashion Information Centre at NIFT-TEA Knitwear Fashion Institute, a facility promoted by the Tirupur Exporters' Association.

"We need knowledge about fashion ... design and forecasting," said G. Karthikeyan, chairman of the Institute and secretary of the Association. Addressing a seminar organised on Thursday by the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Centre for Innovation on Textiles of Emilia Romagna, he said knowledge about fashion trends was crucial for success in the export market.

Chairman of the chamber's Chennai regional committee Sauro Mezzetti said there was scope for improving cooperation between Italy and Tamil Nadu, including putting in place a system to facilitate information on fashion trends.
